Towards a Distributed File System

چکیده
This paper describes IBIS, a distributed file system for a network. of UNIX machines. IBIS provides two levels of abstraction: file access transparency and file location transparency. File access transparency means that all files are accessed in the same way, regardless of whether they are remote or local. File location transparency hides the location of files in the network. IBIS provides a single, location transparent, hierarchical file system that spans several machines. IBIS exploits location transparency by replicating files and mi~rating them where they are needed. Replication and migration improve file system efficiency and fault tolerance. This paper reports on the design, implementation, and performance of the access transparency level, and descri:Jes the design of the location transparency level. This project is supported in part by grants from the National Science FoundatioD. (MCS8219178) and SUN Microsystcms Incorporated.

FusionProv: Towards a Provenance-Aware Distributed Filesystem
It has become increasingly important to capture and understand the origins and derivation of data (its provenance). A key issue in evaluating the feasibility of data provenance is its performance, overheads, and scalability. In this paper, we explore the feasibility of a management layer for parallel file systems, in which metadata includes both file operations and provenance metadata. We desig...
متن کاملApplicability of parallel file systems for technical simulations: a case study
The lack of balance in processor speed and input/output performance of modern computers presents a challenging problem in high performance computing. Parallel and distributed file systems are one of the solutions to this problem because of their ability to distribute the input/output load over the network and improve the performance of clusters in order to meet the demands of applications for t...
متن کاملTowards a Grid File System Based on a Large-Scale BLOB Management Service
This paper addresses the problem of building a grid file system for applications that need to manipulate huge data, distributed and concurrently accessed at a very large scale. In this paper we explore how this goal could be reached through a cooperation between the Gfarm grid file system and BlobSeer, a distributed object management system specifically designed for huge data management under h...
متن کاملTowards a Secure Fragment Allocation of Files in Heterogeneous Distributed Systems
There is a growing demand for large-scale distributed storage systems to support resource sharing and fault tolerance. Although heterogeneity issues of distributed systems have been widely investigated, little attention has been given to security solutions designed for distributed storage systems with heterogeneous vulnerabilities. To address this issue, we design a Secure Fragment Allocation S...
متن کاملA XML Based Datagrid Description Language
We present xDGDL, an approach towards a concise but comprehensive Datagrid description language. Our framework is based on the portable XML language and allows to store syntactical and semantical information together with arbitrary files. This information can be used to administer, locate, search and process the stored data on the Grid. As an application of the xDGDL approach we present ViPFS, ...
متن کاملTowards a forensically ready cloud storage service
In this paper we examine the feasibility of developing a forensic acquisition tool in a distributed file system. Using GFS as a vehicle and through representative scenarios we develop forensic acquisition processes and examine both the requirements of the tool and the distributed file system must meet in order to facilitate the acquisition. We conclude that cloud storage has features that could...
